Decorating with Decorative Pillows

Styling your place with pillows can be a fun and inexpensive way to spruce things up. However, it can be easy to become overwhelmed and look like you have no plan. My advice would be to start with determining the kind of look you want to project. For this particular piece I would suggest deciding between eclectic, traditional, and modern.

For the Modern Home

I would suggest an odd amount of pillows instead of the traditional pairs. It gives the home a new modern vibe and is less expected. The size and shape are also important. Square pillows should be between 18 and 24 inches, which allows for plenty of room for patterns and designs on the fabric. It would also be great to throw in an oblong pillow as well.

For the Eclectic Feel

Stick with either 3 or 5 pillows which will go with the vibe and make sure they look like they just “happened” to be there. That means don’t line them up in a row! Also, be really open with your fabric choices. This is where you can really show off that eclectic vibe, but try to tie it all together with a repeating color, or a few in the same fabric. Ethnic prints are always a great option when trying to create this specific look in your home, or try something like a brightly colored silk pillow. Just make sure not to go too crazy.

For the Traditionalist

Pillow arrangements should come in quantities of 2 or 4 and be arranged in a symmetrical fashion. You could also try pairing square pillows with smaller squares or round pillows to create a nice effect. Traditional style typically calls for lush fabric such as velvet or silk, and the patterns can take many different approaches. You can add a paisley, floral, or plaid print to your pillows, and to make it look more put together and less fussy add solid pillows into the mix as well. This creates an eye-catching look without becoming too overwhelming. If you decide on extra trimmings make sure you do this on larger pillows to balance out the look.
